In the race toward sustainability, not all “green” materials are created equal. While low-carbon and compostable plastics have paved the way for better environmental practices, a new generation of materials is emerging – carbon-negative materials.
These innovative solutions don’t just reduce emissions. They reverse them.
At Biomera, our mission goes beyond traditional sustainability. We believe materials should do more than “harm less”—they should actively repair the climate. Here’s how carbon-negative materials are transforming the plastics industry – and what it means for your brands & businesses.
What Are Carbon-Negative Materials?
Unlike conventional plastics (which emit ~2.5 kg of CO₂ per kg produced) or even compostable bioplastics (which are often carbon-neutral at best), carbon-negative materials lock away carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere during natural decomposition.
At Biomera, we achieve this by upcycling biomass waste, such as sugarcane bagasse, wheat straw, and algae residues into high-performance, durable materials. These organic residues would typically break down and emit CO₂ or methane (CH₄), a far more potent greenhouse gas. Instead, we intercept this natural decay cycle, stabilizing the carbon within the material structure itself.
From Biomass Waste to Climate Solutions
Our proprietary process transforms agricultural waste into carbon-negative fillers, masterbatches, and compostable materials that can be used with both fossil-based and bio-based polymers. Each kilogram of our sugarcane-based material, for instance, removes up to 1.7 kg of CO₂ from the carbon cycle.
This isn’t just good for the planet—it’s also good for your business:
- Lower your Scope 3 emissions
- Improve your product’s carbon footprint
- Strengthen ESG and sustainability reports
- Gain a competitive edge under new EU regulations

Beyond Compostability: Why Carbon-Negative Matters
Compostability is no longer enough. With carbon pricing, ESG audits, and Scope 3 reporting becoming mandatory across Europe, industries need measurable carbon reduction. Our carbon-negative materials:
Are fully compatible with existing manufacturing processes
Come with verified CO₂ impact data
Help you move beyond compliance—to leadership
Proof in Performance
While sustainability is at the heart of our mission, we know performance matters too. Biomera’s materials are:
Mechanically strong and reliable
Customizable for specific applications
Certified for compostability and safety (including EU10/2011)
You don’t have to choose between eco-responsibility and engineering excellence.
